The name Uxmal means 'three times built', and probably it is the original name of the city. Architecturally and aesthetically, Uxmal is the most magestic of all the great Mayan Cities. Geometry in its buildings is quite emphatic and gives a sense of proportion.
Uxmal is the first large settlement of the Puuc Route founded in around 700 to 750. Probably, a smaller community existed before Uxmal was founded. Uxmal has several glyph inscriptions and stelae. The Pyramid of the Magician, the Nunnery Quadrangle. The Governor´s Palace and the House of Turtles are the “must see” buildings in this beautiful place.
As you walk up the entrance, you will see the first building and the most representative of Uxmal: Pyramid of the Magician. This is also known as Hose of the Dwarf. This pyramid is 39 meter tall, and it is one of the rare buildings in all the Yucatan with oval shape and massive rounded ends. Although Uxmal collapsed as a city-state it was never totally abandoned. It continued being used for ceremonies.
This place is located some 80 kilometers south of the city of Merida. This tour can be combided with other destinations or a 2 or more days expeditions.
