Chichen Itza is not only the most famous of all Mayan cities, but it is also the most extensively excavated. Its buildings show strong influences from the ancient cultures of Central Mexico, and were built to mysterious and precise astronomical calculations, which makes them unique.
Chichen Itza's main buildings include the Castle, Ball Court, Temple of Warriors, Group of the Thousand Columns, the Ossuary, Caracol, and Nunnery.
The Castle's main staircase is lined on each side with carvings of plumed serpents leading down to giant serpent heads. During the spring and autumn equinoxes, and the days before and after, the sun comes around the corner of the pyramid revealing the image of the descending serpent-like god, Kukulkan. This astonishing phenomenon clearly demonstrates Mayan astronomical, mathematical, and architectural expertise.
Calling out, clapping hands, or making any other loud noise in front of the Ball Court or Castle creates an interesting echo effect.
