South of Merida are the Puuc hills, also known as Sierrita or Little Sierra. Puuc itself means hill. The Puuc Route goes from the caves of Loltun to one of the greatest cities in the Yucatan: Uxmal. After visiting Uxnal we will visit some archaeological sites: Kabah, Sayil, Labna, and Loltun.

The Mayan cities of the Route Puuc were some of the most densely populated in the Mayan world, which is a bit unexpected, since the area seems unfit for humans. Because the water table is far below the surface, it has the some of the worst water problems in the Yucatan. There are no cenotes in the area, either, to provide water. Mayans had to create their own water supplies by building chultunes, or underground cisterns or tanks, and dug their own aguadas, or dips in the ground that created reservoirs.

We provide tours with certified guides.

The most refined style of architecture can be found here, and in all of the buildings here there is a sense of geometry and design with abstract shapes everywhere. In all of the Puuc sites there is a god-mask with long curling nose identified as Chac, the rain god.
