Coba is unique because of its location and layout. It is next to five of the largest lakes in the Yucatan. Unlike Chichen Itza or Uxmal, which had concentrated plaza-structures, Coba was comprised of separate groups of buildings spread over a wide 70 square kilometer (27 square mile) area. The city was linked by a network of stone roads called sacbes (white roads) that connected it to many other Mayan cities.
Coba is located deep inside the jungle, and requires that you walk along shaded pathways to reach it. Because of its remote location, Coba is a great place to watch birds and other wildlife.
Coba is home to the tallest Mayan pyramid in the Yucatan, the Nohoch Mul (Great Mound) Pyramid, standing approximately 42 meters (140 feet) tall. It is one of only a few pyramids in the Yucatan that you may still climb up.
